A new study shows that Viagra can delay ejaculation.
The researchers examined the effects of men taking sildenafil (the generic name for Viagra), a medication commonly prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction. They also looked at a different group of subjects, who took the drug on a regular basis.
The researchers found that the men who took sildenafil got a faster ejaculation rate after 30 minutes of drinking the blue pill.
The study, published inJournal of the American Medical Association, compared Viagra users to healthy volunteers. Those taking the drug had a faster rate of getting and a smaller chance of getting a less-than-desirable side effect, researchers report.
But, the study's authors concluded, men who took Viagra had a much faster delay of ejaculation than the men who took placebo.
They said they also found that the drug also had fewer side effects, such as headache, flushing and upset stomach.
"We found that taking Viagra delays the onset of ejaculation, which may be a factor contributing to the delay in ejaculation," Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a urologist at New York-Presbyterian Los Angeles, said in a news release.
"While we can't yet know for sure, the delay in ejaculation has been reported as a cause for concern," Dr. Goldstein said.
Viagra's side effect profile is similar to that of Viagra, which is effective for about 80 percent of men with erectile dysfunction.
However, researchers found that the drug had less side effects in those who took Viagra than those who took placebo.
Viagra's effect on the sexual response, they concluded, may be related to how well men take it. In a study of over-the-counter Viagra and sildenafil tablets, the study found that the men who took Viagra had an "increased ability to have and maintain an erection" at some point in their lives.
The authors of the study, Dr. Jennifer M. Duman, assistant professor of urology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Galveston, and her team looked at how men treated with Viagra, including a comparison group of 18 healthy men with no erectile dysfunction.
"To test whether these men who took Viagra could have a delay in ejaculation, we also compared Viagra users who took Viagra with those who took placebo," Dr. Duman said. "This led to a faster onset of ejaculation and reduced ejaculation-related distress," she added.
Viagra was the drug of choice for about 80 percent of men with erectile dysfunction and about half of those men said they were satisfied with their sex lives.
"The findings support the theory that Viagra delays ejaculation, but we also found that the drug also had fewer side effects in those who took Viagra," Duman said.
"These findings suggest that the drug may have a beneficial effect on delaying ejaculation by increasing blood flow to the penis and thereby helping men with erectile dysfunction to have a more satisfying sexual intercourse," she added.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company, a San Diego, Calif.-based company.
